On Tuesday, Police from the Technology Crime Suppression Center (Cyber Police) arrested a young couple for running an illegal gambling website from their home near the Mae Sai border in Chiang Rai.
Cyber Police said the illegal gambling website circulated over 2,400,000 baht per month.
According to the Cyber Police, they applied for a search warrant from the Chiang Rai Provincial Court after neighbours reportedly tipped them off about unusual activity at the house.
Armed with a search warrant, they raided the home of Mr. Anutai, 26, and Ms. Phon, 22, in Village 9, Wiang Pang Kham Subdistrict, Mae Sai District, Chiang Rai Province.
Upon entering the home, police found that Mr. Anutai and Ms. Phon had set up an office in a bedroom, chatting with punters and placing bets online.
Mr. Anutai told police they owned the website, and he was the administrator; Ms. Phon worked soliciting punters through Facebook and Line App. Authorities seized computers, phones, and bank documents linked to the site, and the couple were taken to Mai Sai police station for formal charges.
According to police, they were jointly charged with arranging gambling or using tricks to lure, help advertise or directly or indirectly persuade others to gamble or bet contrary to the Gambling Act B.E. 2478 Section 12.
In the past few months, Cyber police have intensified their crackdown on illegal gambling websites and scam networks targeting locals and foreigners. Authorities recently shut down several operations and arrested suspects involved in fraudulent activities.
They seized computers, documents, and evidence linking operators to online scams and gambling rings. Police are working to trace financial transactions to dismantle larger networks. These actions aim to protect victims and curb rising cybercrime in the region.
