CHIANG RAI – People in Chiang Rai Province are rushing to buy second-hand winter clothes as temperatures keep falling and the cool season starts to settle in. Early morning temperatures are dropping fast.
On Saturday, the open-air market at Big C Supercenter Ban Du was even busier than usual in the chilly weather. Crowds headed straight for the second-hand winter clothing stalls.
Vendors offered cheap winter wear priced between 65 and 500 baht, with imported coats and jackets proving especially popular. Alongside the clothing stalls, there were plenty of food vendors and shops selling everyday items.
Almost every second-hand winter clothing stall displayed signs supporting the “Half-Half” scheme, which helped draw in a constant flow of shoppers. On top of low starting prices, many stalls also offered extra discounts.
Customers included civil servants, private company employees, and farmers from nearby districts, all looking for affordable winter clothing. Some stalls sold items for as little as 30 to 70 baht per piece.
In Chiang Rai, daytime temperatures average around 23 to 27 degrees Celsius, while at night they drop to about 12 to 17 degrees Celsius. As the weather gets colder, second-hand winter clothing has become more popular, especially among people on low incomes who want to save money.
Ms Amornrat Duangropram and Ms Thongdee Chantasen, who sell second-hand clothes at a flea market in Buriram Province, said that once the weather cools down, many locals, civil servants, and students come to buy used winter clothing.
Prices at their stalls start from only 65 baht per item, which is cheaper than new clothes in department stores, yet still good quality. Some customers are buying in bulk as they expect a long, cold season this year.
Their daily income is currently around 5,000 to 6,000 baht. They believe sales could rise to more than 10,000 baht a day if temperatures drop further, as there are days in the winter season when they sell out completely.
