BANGKOK – A violent attack by a mentally ill man has left a mother and her teenage daughter badly injured after he broke into their home and slashed them with a machete-style knife. Police say the suspect later rode a motorcycle to a nearby automatic car wash to clean himself before relatives brought him in to surrender.
Police and rescue workers responded around 4:30 a.m. on March 11 to a home in Village 4, Si Khit Subdistrict, Sichon District of Nakhon Si Thammarat. Officers from Sichon Police Station arrived with local rescue personnel after receiving reports that an attacker had forced his way into the house.
Inside, responders found two victims, a 43-year-old mother, Janyaporn, and her 16-year-old daughter, Kamonwan. Both had multiple deep cuts across their bodies.
Blood was reported throughout the bedroom, and both victims were in critical condition when help arrived. Rescue workers rushed them to Sichon Hospital, where doctors treated the wounds and stabilized them. The mother required 77 stitches, while the daughter needed 66 stitches.
Investigators identified the suspect as Phanupong, 19, who lives in the same village. Police said he smashed through the front door and then forced open the bedroom door.
He then attacked the mother first, without speaking, and when the daughter tried to help, he struck her as well. During the chaos, the daughter managed to turn on a light, recognized the attacker, and fled the house to escape.
After the attack, police said the suspect fled on a motorcycle to an automatic car wash in the village, not far from the crime scene, to wash himself off. Officers began searching the area, and not long after, relatives brought the suspect to the police station to turn himself in. Police said he admitted to the assault, and investigators took him into custody to continue legal proceedings.
According to police questioning, the suspect has a documented mental health condition, along with a brain-related illness, and he reportedly takes daily medication. Authorities also stated he previously struggled with heavy drug use, although family members said he has stopped using drugs. Police are continuing the investigation while coordinating next steps under the law.
