Last week, we covered the rising demand for Ivermectin in Thailand and globally. While this medication has been used safely for decades with minimal side effects, reports of accidental overdosing have emerged.

We spoke with First Med Inc. staff, a supplier of Ivermectin in Thailand and other countries, to clarify proper dosing guidelines.

“Demand for Ivermectin has skyrocketed recently due to its use by doctors worldwide for treating COVID-19 symptoms,” said Erica, a lead pharmacist at First Med.

“If you’re using Ivermectin for parasites, your doctor likely prescribed the correct dose. However, many taking it for COVID prevention, recovery, or post-vaccine effects may not know the right amount to take.”

Recommended Ivermectin Dosage

Independent doctors suggest taking 0.2–0.4 mg of Ivermectin per kilogram of body weight daily, and pairing it with zinc is highly recommended.

If you’re in a high-risk setting or currently ill with COVID-19, a higher dose (around 0.4 mg per kg) is advised. A lower dose (closer to 0.2 mg per kg) is typically sufficient for preventive use.

Dosage Examples

  • 40 kg individual: 8 mg per day (0.2 mg/kg) or 16 mg per day (0.4 mg/kg).
  • 60 kg individual: 12 mg per day (0.2 mg/kg) or 24 mg per day (0.4 mg/kg).
  • 80 kg individual: 16 mg per day (0.2 mg/kg) or 32 mg per day (0.4 mg/kg).
  • 100 kg individual: 20 mg per day (0.2 mg/kg) or 40 mg per day (0.4 mg/kg).

Since Ivermectin is often sold in 12 mg tablets, a 60 kg person could take one tablet (12 mg) daily, along with zinc, for preventive purposes. Adjustments may be needed for higher doses.

Can You Overdose on Ivermectin?

Ivermectin has been safely used for years with few side effects and no known drug interactions. It was awarded the Nobel Prize in 2015 and is included in the WHO’s list of essential medicines.

However, individuals with heavy parasite infections may experience temporary discomfort. As parasites die, their release of toxins can cause nausea, stomach upset, or vomiting. While unpleasant, this process typically results in the patient feeling better once their system is cleared.
