The son of Spanish actor Rodolfo Sancho has been sentenced to life imprisonment for murdering and dismembering a Colombian man last year in Koh Samui, Thailand.

Daniel Sancho Bronchalo, 30, pleaded guilty of the murder of Colombian Surgen Edwin Arrieta Arteaga, 44, whose body parts were found in a local landfill on the tourist island of Koh Samui, Thailand.

Throughout the trial Bronchalo denied the prosecutions claim of premeditated murder saying the killing was an act of self-defense after the two men got into a lovers spat. Bronchalo and  Arteaga hooked up in Thailand in August 2023 for a romantic fling.

He told the court that in a heated moment of rage he struck and killed Arteaga then panicked. He dismembered his lovers body and placed parts of it in plastic bags that ended up in the islands landfill.

The court initially sentenced him to death but reduced that to life due to admitting to the crime and showing remorse. He was ordered to pay the victim’s family 4.42 million baht (US$132,000) in compensation.

Over the past seven decades the death penalty in Thailand has been carried out 320 times, the last execution was in 2018.
