Two people have been killed and another severely injured after the driver of a speeding pickup lost control of his vehicle and crashed head on into another pickup that was parked on the opposite side of the road in central Thailand’s Pathum Thani Province.

According to police two young men who were speeding in a pickup truck on the Pathum-Sena route lost control when came they went off the bridge. Their pickup truck crossed the median strip, and crashed head-on into a pickup truck which a couple had parked on the side of the road.

The driver of the speeding pickup was killed as was the driver of the second pickup. A female passenger in the second pickup was severely injured and taken to Krung Siam St. Carlos Hospital in Pathum Thani. The passenger of the speeding pickup escaped with minor injuries.

Pol. Lt. Col. Watcharapong Thianuppatham told Thai media they would examine CCTV footage in the area and interview witnesses to determine the cause of the accident.

There is a relatively relaxed attitude towards traffic norms in Thailand. Many drivers prioritise personal judgement and expediency over strict adherence to the law. This can result in a general disregard for traffic signals, frequent lane changes, and aggressive driving.

Speeding has been a significant contributor to road accidents in Thailand for many years. Road accidents in Thailand result in the deaths of nearly 20,000 individuals annually.

This equates to 50 individuals per day or two individuals every two hours. Thailand’s highways are among the most hazardous in the world due to the horrific toll.
