NAKHON SAWAN – A heartbreaking multi-vehicle crash in Thailand’s north central province of Nakhon Sawan left one person dead and several others injured after a white Suzuki pickup reportedly sped away from earlier scrapes and then crossed into oncoming traffic.
Police in Krok Phra received an emergency call through the 1669 medical dispatch center about a violent crash involving three vehicles.
The incident happened late at night, near Village 5 in front of the Kru Sot gas station on the Krok Phra to Nakhon Sawan Road, Bang Ma Foe Subdistrict, Krok Phra District, Nakhon Sawan.
Investigators and rescue teams arrived and found a white Suzuki box truck pickup overturned in the middle of the road. Its front end was heavily destroyed. Nearby, two sedans were badly damaged: a black Geely EV with a red temporary plate and a white Honda sedan.
The crash caused at least two people to suffer critical injuries. One woman, Nichamas Chatisut, 49, later died at Krok Phra Hospital. Reports said she suffered multiple injuries, including broken bones and severe bruising.
Pickup Driver Lost Control
Police later identified the box truck pickup driver as Phurithat Wongboonmidech, 46. He was injured and taken to the hospital along with other victims.
Early witness statements pointed to the same driver allegedly sideswiping objects and other vehicles in Mueang Nakhon Sawan District before fleeing. People in the area described the pickup as swerving and cutting across lanes repeatedly for more than 15 kilometers.
After entering Krok Phra District, the vehicle reportedly lost control and crossed the center line, slamming into two oncoming cars. The impact caused major damage and led to injuries and death.
Police detained the driver for legal action and ordered tests for drugs and other possible contributing factors, as officers work to confirm the exact cause.
Viral Video Shows Pickup Driving Erratically
Online, a Facebook user shared a video close to two minutes long. The clip shows a motorcyclist following the box truck pickup on a busy road in the Kosiy area of Nakhon Sawan municipality. In the video, the pickup weaves through traffic, then appears to clip other vehicles, including a motorcycle, before speeding off.
The person who posted the clip, Sorn Panpo, 28, said he heard people shouting for help near the riverside market. They reported a pickup had hit a restaurant sign and fled. He and a coworker immediately rode after it, honking to warn other drivers and calling the police at the same time.
However, he later crashed into another motorcycle near Wat Nakhon Sawan. He suffered injuries and could not continue the pursuit.
Reporters later visited Wat Krok Phra Nuea, where Nichamas’s funeral was held. The mood was heavy, especially for her husband, Kritsana Chatisut, 46.
He said he and his wife were driving to exercise at Sawan Park in Mueang Nakhon Sawan. Not long after leaving home, he saw the box truck pickup coming fast from the opposite side, then crossing into his lane and crashing into their car.
He added that although police had not yet been able to fully question the pickup driver, he believed the driver may have been intoxicated. He said officers told him the driver did not communicate clearly at the scene. He also said he intends to pursue the case to the fullest extent of the law.
