Juneteenth 2022: Here Are 3 Ways You Can Celebrate Juneteenth

(CTN News) – In America, Juneteenth is also known as Freedom Day, Liberation Day, and Emancipation Day. Juneteenth is celebrated every year on June 19.

Juneteenth commemorates the day slaves in Texas learned of their emancipation. Juneteenth can be celebrated in a variety of ways.

LEARN MORE ABOUT BLACK HISTORY

Texas, in its birthplace of Galveston, celebrated Juneteenth for the first time in 1860. Educating yourself about Juneteenth, as well as Black culture and history, is a perfect way to observe it. In stories such as “On Juneteenth” by Annette Gordon-Reed or “The Warmth of Other Suns” by Isabel Wilkerson, the history of slavery in America-and its end-is explored. Juneteenth can also be celebrated by watching documentaries like “A History of Black Achievement in America”.

ATTEND AN EVENT

There are numerous ways for you to observe the holiday, from parades to festivals. You can also support Black-owned businesses or food services at many events. Kimberly Holiday, the first Black woman elected to the Pflugerville City Council and master of ceremonies for the Stay Black & Live festival in Austin, spoke with The Texas Observer.

“Our community is important to come together so that we never forget our history and so that we can tell the story and give meaning to our celebrations,” Holiday said. “We can have a barbeque and listen to some music.” We want to preserve culture.”

HAVE AN OUTDOOR COOKOUT

Enjoy a cookout with your loved ones on Juneteenth. Plan a cookout that incorporates red foods or drinks to honor the sacrifices made by slaves in the past.

In addition to commemorating when slaves were freed from one of America’s darkest periods in history, Juneteenth serves as a time to celebrate community, family, and friends. Spend Juneteenth learning about Black history, attending an event, or spending time with your loved ones.
