In the Atlantic, a Cargo Ship Containing Porsches, Lamborghinis, and Bentleys sinks

It has been reported that a cargo ship carrying thousands of vehicles has sunk after it headed across the Atlantic Ocean, according to the company that operated the vessel (As reported by Insider). As the cargo ship was making its way from Germany to the United States on February 16th, a fire broke out on the Felicity Ace during a row.

A company representative confirmed to Insider that nearly 4,000 vehicles are being transported by the Volkswagen Group to the United States. As reported by the Associated Press, the Felicity Ace was carrying several cars, including some that were both electric and non-electric, and reports from February said that Porsches, Bentleys, Lamborghinis, and other luxury vehicles were among the vehicles aboard. In a report published in February, Reuters reported that although it’s unclear what started to fire, the captain of the port of Hortas revealed that lithium-ion batteries in the electrical vehicles aboard the cargo ship caught fire.

Operator MOL Ship Management Singapore reported that the cargo ship sank at 9 AM local time around 220 nautical miles away (about 253 miles) from the coastline of the Azores, an archipelago in the middle of the Atlantic that’s an autonomous region of Portugal as well. In the early hours after the fire broke out, the Portuguese Navy reported that all 22 crew members had been evacuated from the cargo ship and didn’t need medical attention.

In the early morning hours of Friday, a salvage team was able to board the vessel, and according to MOL Ship Management Singapore, “the smoke is presently not visible from the vessel.” As the Wall Street Journal reports, the vessel was being towed when it sank, but this has not been confirmed publicly.
