3 Ways to Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr Day in Ames on Monday

In honor of Martin Luther King Jr., there will be a hybrid in-person/online event at 6:30 p.m. on Monday at 520 Sixth Street, on the north side of City Hall. At 6:15 p.m., there will be a celebration video.

Jeff Johnson, a long-time resident of Ames, will be the keynote speaker. Johnson is the president and CEO of the Lora and Russ Talbot Endowed Iowa State University Alumni Association.

According to a news release, he plans to discuss the impact Dr. King has had on his work and life.

Every year we use this time to remember and learn from Dr. King’s legacy,” Vanessa Baker-Latimer, chair of the Ames/Story County MLK Celebration Committee, said in a statement. “While we celebrate Dr. King’s day as a powerful reminder of his teaching, it is our wish that people keep his legacy alive every day.”

Here are 3 Ways To Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr Day

1. MLK Day Milwaukee Health Fair

A health fair is being held by Jump at the Sun, the Wisconsin Tobacco Prevention and Poverty Network, and others from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Avenue Atkinson. There will be health awareness games and prizes, food giveaways, and COVID testing and vaccinations. While supplies last, there will also be $50 gift cards for the first dose and $25 gift cards for the second dose and boosters.

2. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Tu B’Shvat: food, environmental and racial justice

It is not just Martin Luther King Jr. Day, However, it is also the Jewish New Year of Trees, Tu B’Shvat. Join this panel discussion on food justice, environmental justice, and racial justice with Venice Williams and Michelle Dobbs, hosted by Tikkun Ha-Ir. The start time is 12:00 p.m.

3. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day 21st Annual MLK Justice program

The first part of the program will be a gathering at 1 p.m. in front of the Martin Luther King, Jr. statue near North Martin Luther King Boulevard, and West Walnut Street. There will be civil rights songs and listening to Dr. King’s words performed by Andre Lee Ellis as well as reflections on the significance of the day.
