U.S. Plans To Expand Sanctions Against Russian Individuals In The Coming Days
In the coming days and weeks, the Biden administration is set to ramp up the number of sanctions targeting top Russian officials and those in President Vladimir Putin’s inner circle as it begins implementing additional sanctions, according to multiple US officials.
As part of the ongoing process, the Ukrainian government has taken into account specific suggestions of targets made by top Ukrainian officials, including President Volodymyr Zelensky, the source said. According to one of the officials, Zelensky had a phone conversation with US President Joe Biden last week and provided him with a more specific list of targets for individual sanctions. The administration is currently working on how to address those requested targets.
It is important to note that Zelensky, in his virtual remarks to Congress, went further today by calling on the US to impose sanctions on all Russian politicians who continue to support the government.
Even though some of Zelensky’s demands remain off the table for Biden, including the establishment of a no-fly zone, the administration sees the sanctions as a powerful weapon that can be used readily.
The United States has imposed sanctions on a number of top Russian officials and oligarchs in the wake of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, as well as their family members.
As part of this agreement, Biden also approved targeting Putin personally with individual sanctions, in
coordination with the EU and the UK.
