Sean Penn

The actor Sean Penn is currently in Ukraine working on a documentary produced by VICE about the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Sean Penn made a powerful statement at a government press conference in the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, on Friday, condemning the actions of Russian President Vladimir Putin. The actor has been filming the documentary since last year, despite increasingly hostile situations.

Sean Penn spoke at a government press conference in Kyiv on Friday, reports Deadline:

Already a brutal mistake of lives taken and hearts broken, and if he doesn’t relent, I believe Mr. Putin will have made the most horrible mistake for all of humankind. President Zelenskyy and the Ukrainian people have risen as historic symbols of courage and principle. Ukraine is the tip of the spear for the democratic embrace of dreams. If we allow it to fight alone, our soul as America is lost,”  Sean Penn said.

On Thursday, the Office of Ukraine President posted that Sean Penn attended several press briefings, met with Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk, and spoke to journalists and military personnel about the Russian invasion. In late November, he worked on the project, which is produced by VICE Studios. At the time, he was photographed visiting the frontlines of the Ukrainian Armed Forces near the Donetsk region.

Russia invaded Ukraine, it’s neighbor to the southwest, in a large-scale military operation on 24 February 2022. The invasion marked a major step in the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian War that began in 2014. During this crisis, Russia’s president, Vladimir Putin, criticized NATO’s post-1997 enlargement as a security threat and demanded that Ukraine be forbidden from joining the military alliance.

In response to President Putin’s actions, the invasion received widespread international condemnation, and sanctions were imposed on the Russian government. A number of anti-war protesters in Russia were arrested. The Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, has stated that he will remain in the country and continue to defend it against Russian attacks.
