Fresh Express Salad Recalls, Associated Listeria infections Probed by FDA

Fresh Express Salad recalls: Following a positive listeria monocytogenes test for a random sample, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recalled packaged salads manufactured by Fresh Express and sold under a variety of brand names on Dec. 21.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has identified 10 total infections, which resulted in 10 hospitalizations and one death, that match the outbreak strain identified in the random sample so far. The infections, however, occurred between July 26, 2016, and Oct. 19, 2021.

Salads with product codes Z324 through Z350 are recalled.

Salads that have been recalled should be thrown away by consumers. If you would like more information or a refund, call 800-242-5472 between 8 a.m. until 7 p.m. Eastern Time. Your local store can also issue a refund.

The FDA recommended that people who had the recalled greens in their homes be extra cautious about cleaning and sanitizing surfaces and containers that may have been in contact with the products. Refrigerated foods and surfaces can spread Listeria if kept at cool temperatures.

Symptoms of a listeria infection

People aged 65 and older, as well as those with weakened immune systems, may be susceptible to listeria infection caused by eating food contaminated with the listeria bacterium. Women who are pregnant or have recently delivered are also susceptible to serious infections caused by the bacterium.Symptoms include headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, fever, muscle aches,, and convulsions, according to the USDA.

Listeria-contaminated foods usually cause symptoms one to four weeks after consumption. However, some people have reported symptoms as early as the day after exposure and as late as 70 days later. The diagnosis of listeriosis is made with a bacterial culture and treated with antibiotics.

CDC estimates that about 1,600 Americans get listeriosis each year, resulting in 260 deaths. The risk of listeria infection is four times higher for Americans aged 65 and older.
