CHIANG RAI – Tourists are flocking to the mountain attraction called Doi Patang and the Doi Chang Agricultural Center in Chiang Rai Province to savor the romantic winter and celebrate their New Year.

Different local organizations in Chiang Rai Province are jointly holding the annual New Year and winter tourism festival on Doi Patang to highlight the cultural diversity and to boost the local economy.

Visitors are able to enjoy cultural performances by the eight ethnic groups, a photograph competition and an exhibition of Doi Patang. The event has attracted an overwhelming number of tourists who are eager to relish the winter charms of the mountain attraction.

All hotel rooms have been fully booked and the campsite which is able to accommodate over 3,000 people has been occupied until 5th January. The organizers confirmed safety measures were already in place to ensure a happy holiday for all visitors.

Meanwhile, Cherry blossoms are blooming at Doi Chang Agricultural Center in Chiang Rai Province as tourists continue to visit the area to enjoy the scenery and experience the cold weather.

Visitors were permitted to erect tents among the newly blossoming cherry trees and drink fresh coffee grown on Doi Chang, where temperatures are around 15 degrees Celsius in the morning at present.

The top of Doi Chang is 1500-1600 meters above sea level and is a popular tourist destination during the winter, a time when visitors are able to see the full beauty of winter flowers grown at the Agricultural Center, cherry blossoms being among the most admired.

Mae Fah Luang Chiang Rai International Airport director Ittipol Boonaree said tourism in Chiang Rai saw a significant pickup in tourism during the New Year. Over the long holiday, the airport had to service fully-booked 40 flights per day.

According to Mr. Ittipol, the daily number of holidaymakers using the Chiang Rai airport during this New Year jumped to 7,000 from 5,000 year-on-year, accounting for a 27 % increase.
