The Village of Mae Salong – A Serene Hillside Retreat

Mae Salong is a mountainside Chinese village settled by the 93rd Regiment of the KMT after the Chinese Revolution. In the past they were heavily involved in the cultivation and trade of opium and other drugs, but that has been largely replaced by tea and food crops. Lisu, Akha, and other ethnic tribes live in the neighboring hills.

The village of Mae Salong is a beautiful small village tucked away in the hills of Chiang Rai province in Thailand. Also known as Santikhiri this alluring village produces some of the finest tea in the region. You can even visit the tea factories in the area and learn how the people of Mae Salong produce their delicious tea. The village celebrates the Cherry Blossom Festival every year where you can enjoy unique cultural dances, a parade by the villagers and also buy handicrafts made by the locals. Most foreigners come to the village to participate in volunteer programs as well, including rebuilding a school for the children and conducting English lessons for the villagers. These projects do not charge any money and you can volunteer as little or as much as you like. You can also pick up some souvenirs for your friends and family such as locally produced tea, mushrooms and herbs.

You will find a large number of cafes built using bamboo in the Golden Triangle area. These small cafes serve some delightful Thai dishes. When in Mao Salong you can try some Yunnanese dishes as well. Yunnan noodles with bean gravy is a popular dish which will leave your taste buds wanting for more.
