CHIANG RAI – According to the Chiang Rai Tourism Association, a sharp rise in visitor numbers to the province is due to an early arrival of winter which marks its tourist peak season.

The association said that as the mercury continues to drop, more visitors are arriving in the province to visit such attractions as Phu Chi Fah and Doi Pha Tang.

Hotels in Chiang Rai enjoyed an average occupancy rate of 70 percent in October and November and nearly 100 percent in December. Over 1,000 rooms have been added this year to accommodate an increase in tourist arrivals.

The association reported that 2.5 million people visited Chiang Rai last year, 70 percent of whom are domestic visitors. The tourism sector generated around 10 billion baht in revenue. This year, the figure can rise to 11 billion baht, and 3 million in visitor number.

The association has recently signed a pact with Japan to encourage aging Japanese visitors to have a long stay in the northern province.
