Thai Woman Accused of Cheating 11 Men of Dowries after Fake Marriages Arrested

NAKHOM PATHOM – Police in Thailand have arrested Ms. Jariyaporn Buayai, alias Nam Mon, accused of cheating at least 11 men of dowries after fake marriages, has denied having an intention of cheating them.

Ms Jariyaporn, 32, was arrested on Thursday (Sept 7) in Sam Phran district of Nakhon Pathom province with an arrest warrant issued by Pratunam Chulalongkorn police in Pathum Thani province for theft where a man who claimed to be one of her victims filed a complaint.

She was brought to the Crime Suppression Division (CSD) for a press conference on Friday.

Jariyaporn is charged under Section 342 of the Criminal Code – deceiving another person about your true identity for criminal purposes – which is punishable by up to five years in jail, a Bt10,000 fine or both.

Pol Lt-Gen Thitiraj Nhongharnpitak, Commissioner of Central Investigation Bureau, said at least 11 men, who live in different provinces, have so far claimed to be her victims, with a total damage of about 3 million baht.

The victims, from various provinces, met her online and were convinced of her sincerity when she presented an elderly couple as her parents when the subject of a wedding and dowry came up.

Jariyaporn, who claimed her family had a fruit-selling business in many provinces, allegedly spent about two months in a relationship with each victim before bringing up the subject of marriage and managing to get them to wire the dowry to her.

Ms Jariyaporn said she had no intention of cheating the men who married her. Of the men who claimed to be her victims, the woman said she married seven of them.

She said was a fruit trader. The men who claimed to be her victims had not been fooled to marry her and the marriages took place after a period of relationships, she added.

Ms Jariyaporn had been wanted over the past two years on four warrants, issued in Chanthaburi, Chumphon, Rayong and Loei provinces, for alleged fraud and forgery of official documents.

Jariyaporn also allegedly cheated fruit vendors in Chumphon, Chanthaburi and Rayong by ordering fruit in bulk and failing to pay.
