Mekong River Near Critical Level In Chiang Rai
Chiangrai Times – Severe flooding in China’s southern Yunnan province is pushing up water level of the Mekong River in Thailand’s northern Chiang Rai province to an alarming level.
Thai Officials reported that on Sunday, the river’s water level measured 7.91 metres deep in Chiang Saen district, close to the critical level of 9.50 metres.
Locals in Chiang Saen district said upstream torrent flowing into the Kham and Kok Rivers have overflowed to their farmlands, with some corn fields almost two metres under floodwater.
Officials warn that floods from Yunnan may soon push Mekong River water level in Chiang Rai up to 10.41 metres, similar to the level in 2008 when the area became hugely flooded.
