Measles confirmed in metro Atlanta for the first time since 2020

(CTN News) – A measles case has been confirmed in metro Atlanta, the first case in the state since 2020, according to Georgia health officials.

The unvaccinated individual, who was traveling abroad, was exposed to this virus, according to officials.

Officials have not disclosed any identifying information regarding the Measles case, but the Georgia Department of Public Health is working to identify anyone who may have been in contact with them while they were infected.

There are a number of reasons why the virus is highly contagious, one of them being its ability to spread through coughing and sneezing.

After someone who has been infected with measles has left the room, it is possible for the virus to remain in the air or on surfaces for up to two hours.

The symptoms of the virus often appear seven to 14 days after contact with it, and include fever, coughs, runny noses, and watery eyes. As time passes, a red rash appears on the head and eventually spreads to other parts of the body.

According to the Centers for Measles Disease Control and Prevention, all Georgian children between the ages of 12 and 15 months should receive a dose of the MMR vaccine from the time they receive their first dose until they reach the age of four or six in order to prevent infection.

The best course of action if you or a loved one have been infected is to avoid public places and to contact your physician as soon as possible. Call your public health care provider before visiting them about your Measles symptoms,
