A YouTuber and bestselling author, Lindsay Ellis, 37, quit Twitter and YouTube in December 2021 due to online harassment. She stepped away from social media in the wake of a Twitter controversy surrounding her criticism of Raya and the Last Dragon.

Who is Lindsay Ellis?

Lindsay Ellis, 37 years old, is a YouTuber and a Great author. Her YouTube channel has more than one million subscribers, where she posts video essays and film reviews.
As a member of the Channel Awesome production company, The Nostalgia Chick began her career in 2008.

Ellis quit Channel Awesome in 2014 to focus on creating long-form video essays and on writing.

Ellis produces videos about Walt Disney Pictures films on her YouTube channel, as well as video essays about the movie industry and a long-running series about the Transformers films.

Her favorite topics say, Ellis, are “things that have this really interesting potential but are deeply flawed.”

Axiom’s End, her debut sci-fi novel, was a New York Times Best Seller when it was released in July 2020.

She also started a podcast, MusicalSplaining, where she discusses musicals with Kaveh Taherian, a director and illustrator.

After being harassed online throughout her career, the star retired from YouTube and Twitter in December 2021.

Why has Lindsay Ellis quit Twitter?

Lindsay Ellis announced on Twitter on December 28, 2021, that she is quitting her career as a content creator.

She announced the news in a Patreon blog post entitled “Walking away from Omelas”.

The decision came after she was “harassed to her breaking point” for an old tweet in which she claimed Disney’s Raya And The Last Dragon was similar to Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Lindsay deleted the tweet on March 26, 2021, and shortly afterward posted another explaining that she did not mean to imply that “all Asian-inspired properties are the same”.

What has Lindsay Ellis said?

Disney’s Raya and The Last Dragon, based on traditional Southeast Asian cultures, was the subject of the two deleted tweets that triggered a mob of online trolls.

“We need a name for this genre that sounds like Avatar: the Last Airbender scaled back.” This genre accounts for about half of all YA fantasy titles published in the last few years.”

She was accused of implying that Avatar inspired stories from Eastern cultures with her tweet, causing a wave of criticism.

She tweeted the following day, “I can see where you may have gotten the impression that Asian-inspired properties are all the same, especially if you were privy to those conversations. TLA is becoming more popular outside of Asian-inspired fiction.”

Earlier this year, Lindsay announced on her Patreon page that she was retiring from social media.

This year, I’ve learned that I’m highly expendable because it’s hollow and brittle.”
