YANGON -Protests against the death sentence handed down by a Thai court to two Myanmar youths for the murder of two British backpackers on Koh Tao, Thailand, has entered its fifth day in Yangon.

At the protest staged near the Thai embassy in Yangon more and more protesters join each day demonstrating and chanting ‘We want justice’ and ‘Save our brothers’.
Security personnel blocked the road with barbed wire to protect the entrance to the Thai Embassy in Yangon.
The protesters are demanding the immediate release of Zaw Lin (21) and Win Zaw Tun (23), who were controversially convicted of the murder and sentenced to death.
“We don’t want injustice. We want justice. We will continue staging protests until the two Myanmar youths have been released,” said one Burmese protester.
Htet Htet, one of the protesters, wrote phrases with her blood demanding ‘Save the two Myanmar youth’ and ‘We plead with the Thai king to save the two Myanmar youths’.
“I illegally worked in Malaysia. I feel considerate toward the two Myanmar youths. Myanmar workers overseas have very little security. I have shown my blood by piercing my hand to demand the release of the two Myanmar youths,” Htet Htet said.
A wish at Shwedagon Pagoda
The protesters marched to Shwedagon Pagoda at about 12pm on December 27, making wishes for the release of Zaw Lin and Win Zaw Tun on the pagoda platform.
“Most of the people know the judgment is unfair. Therefore, we are making a wish for them. The Thai government should review the evidence,” a Buddhist monk said.
Myanmar’s military chief Senior General Min Aung Hlaing sent a message to Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister General Prawit Wongsuwon and Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Thai Army General Sommai Kaotira through Myanmar ambassador Win Maung on December 26, asking the officials to review the death sentence handed down to the two Myanmar youths.
A visit to Suu Kyi’s House
The protesters proceeded to the front of Aung San Suu Kyi’s residence after making a wish at Shwedagon Pagoda and demanded her assistance in securing the release of the two Myanmar convicts.
Win Htein, the spokesperson of the National League for Democracy (NLD), met with the protesters, telling them that Aung San Suu Kyi would provide a legal support.
“Suu Kyi said she would give legal assistance. But we should not interfere in the judicial process of Thailand. We will give legal support in this regard from the angle of human rights,” Win Htein said.
