Woman Arrested for Abandoning Her Newborn in Garbage Bin

Police have arrested a woman after she allegedly dumped her newborn baby into a garbage bin in the Bang Kapi district of Bangkok on Tuesday morning. A motorcyclist found the crying newborn child in the garbage bin.

About 1:30 am, police and rescue workers were called to a side street near Chao Phor Sua shrine on Happy Land 1 Road in the Khlong Chan area of Bangkok.

A newborn baby girl was found in a red garbage bin wrapped in a yellow towel, said Pol Lt Col Somprasong Raksakaew, crime suppression chief at Lat Phrao police station.

Fortunately, the newborn baby was still alive and was cared for immediately.

In the immediate aftermath, a police patrol detained a 30-year-old Myanmar woman working in a kha moo shop (stewed pork leg) nearby. According to the Bangkok Post, the woman was questioned and found to be the mother.

The mother was taken to Nopparat Hospital with the newborn baby.

A motorcycle rider, Kittiphan Mongkholkitkun, 31, told reporters that he parked his motorcycle after returning home from the market. Hearing a baby cry, he went to investigate.

He found a baby in a garbage bin in front of a store, wrapped in a towel with its head down. He called the police right away.

When Pol Lt Col Somprasong arrived at the scene he was unsure of how long the child had been inside or whether she would survive. For her safety, he could seek a blessing from the nearby shrine.

Upon hearing that the mother and newborn baby had reached the hospital safely, he was delighted.

The woman would be questioned by police and charged, he said.
