Thailand’s Reopening Causes a Surge in Illegal Border Crossings

On Sunday soldiers intercepted seven Myanmar nationals who illegally crossed into Thailand from the border town of Tachileik yesterday. The seven were caught by security officers on foot patrol in Ban Pa Chang Ngam in Mae Sai district in Chiang Rai Province.

Twenty more Myanmar nationals were arrested for illegal entry by Army Rangers from the Pha Muang Force in Mae Ai district of Chiang Mai also on Sunday.

Thailand’s border provinces have seen more than 3,000 migrants caught entering the country without going into quarantine during a crackdown on illegal border crossings in the past month.

Border officials say that the reopening of the Kingdom to vaccinated visitors on Nov 1 has prompted illegal job seekers to enter Thailand via the northern, northeastern, and eastern borders in search of illegal employment.

Job Seekers Found Dead, 23 Abandoned after Truck Crash

On Saturday, 3 Myanmar job seekers have been found dead among 26 migrants abandoned in central Thailand after the truck transporting them crashed.

Police and rescue workers rushed to the scene in Kamphaeng Phet after being alerted by local residents.

When they arrived, they found a group of Myanmar migrant job seekers. Among them 3 job seekers were found Dead, 23 Abandoned after Truck Crashe three dead, and four injured. None of the migrant job seekers had entry documents.

The bodies of the three accident victims were sent for postmortem examinations and the injured people were taken to a local hospital. The remaining migrant workers were taken for Covid-19 testing.
