Thailand’s Lawmakers Push for Full Marijuana Legalisation

A statement from Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health said that it will push next year for the full legalisation of all cannabis (marijuana) parts so that the plant is fully used and commercialized.

Marijuana (Cannabis) stems, roots, leaves, and sprigs were removed from Thailand’s Category 5 narcotics list earlier this year, but flowers and buds remained.

Hemp and cannabis (marijuana) have been removed from the Narcotics Code, which took effect on Thursday.

A revised list of narcotics for each of the five categories will be released by the ministry soon. Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said on Saturday that all but one form of marijuana will no longer be on it.

He said the only exception is cannabidiol extracts that contain more than 0.2% tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

Upon the implementation of the new list, all cannabis products including oils, soaps, cosmetics, and supplements, which normally contain less than 0.2% of THC, will be allowed to be manufactured and used.

Thailand doesn’t set the number unilaterally. He said the concentration level deemed dangerous by the World Health Organization was the standard.

In Nakhon Phanom, Mr Anutin launched the “Cannabis Kickoff on Mekong Bank” event on Saturday. It aims to increase the amount of cannabis grown and processed, thus stimulating the economy and agricultural tourism, he noted.
Every household will be able to grow as many (marijuana) plants as they like. Obtaining permission from authorities is the only condition.

The Food and Drug Administration has been instructed to streamline and streamline the process.

Volunteers from the villages will also inform people about the existence of cannabis (marijuana) clinics in almost all hospitals in Thailand, Mr Anutin said.

In the next step, all drugs with extracts of cannabis will be included in the universal coverage scheme for people of all ages.

The Covid-19 pandemic had devastated people, and Mr Anutin explained that the cannabis initiative would help them.

If the economy recovers without new products, people will keep doing the same things and competing with one another, he said. “But if we provide them with alternatives, they will be able to learn to create new products and business models, which will speed up economic recovery.”
