PHUKET – Police have revealed that an Australian man was found dead in a hotel swimming pool in Phuket Wednesday. Police have withheld the victim identity and only said he was a 49 year-old man from Australia.
The Australian was found in the pool at the Naiharn Beach Resort in tambon Rawai about 6am, Pol Lt Col Prasit Ra-ob, investigation chief at Chalong police station, said. He was wearing black shorts and a long-sleeved shirt.
“He allegedly came to the resort to meet a friend. His friend returned to his room, leaving [the Australian man] sitting alone in a pool side chair.” Col Prasit said.
Police investigators learned the Australian man had a bipolar disorder and suffered from depression. He had attempted suicide on several occasions, according to police.
Police believe that his death may be related to medication he was taking for bipolar disorder.
His body was taken to Vachira Phuket Hospital for a postmortem examination.
Thai media reported that the dead tourist was a former police officer.
Col Prasit noted, adding that Australian consular officials have been notified of the death.
