Over 30 people have been arrested in The Hague and other towns in the Netherlands following unrest following “acts of violence.” The arrested followed“more acts of violence ” the previous night at a protest against coronavirus restrictions.

It was not as violent as Friday night in Rotterdam when police opened fire on rampaging rioters and arrested 51 people.

Nineteen people were arrested in The Hague and a water cannon was used to extinguish a street fire.

In Alkmaar and Almelo, two soccer matches in the country’s top professional soccer teams were briefly interrupted by fans – banned from matches under a partial lockdown in force in the Netherlands for a week – who broke into stadiums.

In The Hague, police said five officers were injured as they tried to break up unrest by a group of youths who set at least two fires on the streets and threw fireworks. Police said in a tweet that one rioter threw a rock at an ambulance carrying a patient to a hospital.

The police arrested a total of 13 people for setting fires and throwing fireworks in Roermond and Stein, and eight people for public order offenses in Urk, Dutch broadcaster NOS reported.

Orgy of violence in the Netherlands

On Saturday, two protests against COVID-19 measures took place peacefully in Amsterdam and Breda. Amsterdam was filled with thousands of protesters protesting COVID-19 restrictions.

There were tens of thousands of protesters in Vienna on Saturday after the Austrian government announced a nationwide lockdown beginning on Monday to contain skyrocketing Coronavirus infections.

Demonstrations were also held in Italy, Switzerland, Croatia, and Northern Ireland.

Three rioters were hit by bullets in Rotterdam, and police are investigating to determine if they were shot by police. No information was released about their conditions.

According to police, 51 people were arrested in Rotterdam on Saturday, about half of them minors. One police officer was hospitalized with a leg injury sustained in the rioting, another was treated by ambulance staff, and “countless” others suffered minor injuries.

Rotterdam Mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb called the rioting in his city an “orgy of violence” and said that “on a number of occasions the police felt it necessary to draw their weapons to defend themselves.”
