Police Search for Covid Positive Tourist Who Fled Quarantine Hotel

Thailand’s Immigration Police are searching for an Israeli who left his Bangkok hotel before waiting for the result of his Covid-19 test, which later revealed positive results.

Initial reports suggest he went to Pattaya, but later Koh Samui was reported as his destination.

Tourist police and immigration officers worked closely with local police in the search for the infected man.

The Israeli tourist arrived in Thailand in the early hours of Dec 17 and was quarantined at a hotel in Sukhumvit while waiting for his Covid-19 RT PCR results.

The following day, he left the hotel without waiting for the results and took a taxi to Pattaya around 2 pm. At the same time, the hotel found out that the man had a Coronavirus infection. Hotel staff notified Thong Lor police that the man had been missing.

It was reported that the tourist tried to check-in at a hotel in Pattaya but failed to produce his passport, so the hotel rejected him.

Thai media reported that the man had taken a taxi from Bangkok to Pattaya, which he had hired from in front of the Emporium department store, for 2,500 baht.

The Israeli tourist was referred to in the Bangkok Post as “Mr Ohad”.

According to reports, he returned to Bangkok on Dec 19 and rented a van for his trip to southern Thailand. It was reported he was in Chumphon on Monday morning before going to Koh Samui of Surat Thani in the afternoon that day.

Lieutenant General Archayon Kraithong, the Deputy Commissioner of the Immigration Bureau, led the team searching for the missing tourist.

In the hours leading up to 10:30 pm on Dec 18, the police checked his mobile phone usage record and found that he had turned it off.

The police of Thong Lor asked the Department of Disease Control to file a complaint against the tourist for violating the emergency decree regarding disease control. The offence carries a maximum penalty of two years in prison and/or a fine of 40,000 baht.

As a foreign national, he also has been accused of failing to remain in a residence where he was supposed to stay. 5,000 baht is the maximum fine for the offence.

The police suspect that some Thais are helping the missing Israeli tourist.
