Chiang Mai Prison Guard Caught Smuggling Methamphetamine to Inmates
CHIANG MAI – A Chiang Mai central prison Guard Anond Wongsen was arrested on Sunday while on duty as he attempted to smuggle in methamphetamine and mobile phones to sell to prisoners.
Pol Col Weerawut Niemnoi, deputy commander of Chiang Mai provincial police, said the province’s central prison arrested Anond Wongsen, 35, with 3,651 ya ba pills and three mobile phones on Friday. He hid the contraband in his uniform.
The police then searched the suspect’s house in Wieng Pa Pao district in Chiang Rai over the weekend and found 3,675 yaba pills and five more mobile phones, seven mobile phone batteries, 21 chargers and 100,000 baht in cash.
Investigators found that Wongsen became a prison officer in February and allegedly started selling methamphetamine and mobile phones immediately.
Local police will work with the regional narcotics division to expand the investigation and examine more of Mr Anond’s assets to find out whether he has a history of selling illegal drugs before working at the prison.
