BANGKOK – Today the Supreme Court Trial began the second hearing of the controversial rice-pledging scheme with former prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra standing trial for deleriction of duty.

The trial today saw Ms Yingluck and her team of lawyers appearing before the panel of nine judges to defend her.

Ms Yingluck arrived at 9 am at the court amid warm welcome by about 300 supporters who included some former MPs of the Pheu Thai part chanting “Yingluck Soo Soo” to give her morale boost.

The Office of the Attorney-General which charged her for dereliction of duty that inflicted immense damages to the country of over 500 billion baht acted on behalf of the National Ant-Corruption Commission.

The office prepared four state witnesses for the Supreme Court to question over the charge imposed on Ms Yingluck. They included Ms Supha Piyajitti, commissioner of NACC and former head of the accounting assessment subcommittee, Ms Nengnoi Charoenthawisap, an auditor.

The Supreme Court allowed altogether 17 state witnesses to testify in the case, while Ms Yingluck was given permission to bring 42 witnesses to defend her.

The court has set the last session of the hearing of Ms Yingluck on November 18 from a total of 16 hearings, beginning April 1.

For the accuser, the court permitted five hearings beginning January 15. The last hearing is scheduled on March 23. – Thai PBS
