BANGKOK – Video of a taxi driver was caught overcharging a passenger he picked up at Suvarnabhumi airport on Sunday night has gone viral on Facebook.

The passenger Lek Monthon posted a video of the incident on his Facebook page, and told the Bangkok Post that he noticed the fare meter was clicking over unusually fast.

“I asked the taxi driver about the meter, and he said it was broken and the car had a new set of wheels,” the passenger wrote.

After they reached their destination the frustrated passenger filmed the taxi driver and lectured him.

After the video went viral, the Department of Land Transport summoned the taxi driver, Nittayasai Panlert, on Tuesday. His driver’s license was suspended for a month and he was fined 2,000 baht.

According to the department, cheating taxi drivers, if caught, will have to pay a 2,000 baht fine, take a three-hour customer service course and their license will be suspended for one month.

If the taxi driver is accused repeatedly, the offender could be sentenced to a maximum three years imprisonment and/or a fine of up to 6,000 baht.
