Thailand Extradites 3 Iranian Prisoners to Tehran
“Three of these six people arrived in Tehran yesterday (Friday) morning and were extradited to the Iranian side to be transferred to jail,” Kamalian told CRT.
He said that another three inmates who were claimed to be involved in smuggling illicit drugs will be transferred to Iran as soon as possible and after going through the necessary legal procedures.
Kamalian also announced that the Thai government has agreed to extradite more Iranian prisoners to complete their jail terms in Iran.
In January 2012, former Iranian ambassador to Thailand said that according to the latest statistics, 163 Iranian nationals are being held captive in Thai prisons. Among these prisoners, 149 people have been convicted of drug charges, and 140 prisoners are serving life sentences.
He said that the Iranian embassy in Bangkok had attempted to put a break on the growing number of such arrests in Thailand, adding that fortunately, with the assistance of the relevant bodies, “these efforts have produced fruit”.
He also said that an agreement on the extradition of convicts has also been signed between the Islamic republic and Thailand.
