Thai policemen stand guard outside the US Embassy as anti-government protestors shout slogans during a protest march in Bangkok – INDRANIL MUKHERJEE

BANGKOK – Supporters of the Student and People Network for Thailand’s Reform (STR) have gathered in front of the U.S. embassy in Bangkok on Thursday.

The STR along with other anti-government forces on Thursday morning headed to the Asoke intersection to continue their protest against the Yingluck administration. As a large number of demonstrators were marching back to Democracy Monument, the STR made their way to the embassy on Witthayu Road.

The group had earlier announced its intention to possibly seize the embassy in defiance of Washington’s support for Thailand’s caretaker government.

According to the STR, Washington has urged Thai citizens to respect democratic principles and human rights without realizing that many Thais are fighting an undemocratic government.

Up to 40 police officers are monitoring the situation in front of the embassy, fearing that tension might escalate.
