The man fell from the second floor escalator all the way to the basement-level of Siam Paragon shopping centre in Bangkok.

BANGKOK – A 44 year-old Thai man who fell from an escalator at Siam Paragon shopping centre on Friday evening has died, Pol Col Kritsana Pattanacharoen, deputy spokesman for the Royal Thai Police Office said Saturday.

Pol Col Kritsana told Thai Media that 44-year-old Samret Sangteerapeetikul, died during the night as he was being treated for severe injuries at the Police Hospital.

Samrej fell four metres from the escalator on M floor to G floor at 9pm on Friday. The Bangkok native was taken to Police General Hospital for treatment of traumatic brain and lung injuries plus a broken left arm. The incident caused panic among shoppers at the busy upscale mall.

Pol Col Kritsana said iIt was not clear why he fell however police investigators speculate it was an act of suicide.

Investigators from the Pathumwan police station had checked security camera footage and found indications of no foul play or of any other persons involved in the incident. The family had no suspicions about Samrej’s death.

An autopsy is being performed to determine the exact cause of his death.
