Counter terrorism officers questioning the 14-year-old girl at Bukit Aman

KUALA LUMPUR– Immigration authorities in Malaysia have detained a 14-year-old girl just before she flew off to join the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (Isis) militant group.

Inspector-General of police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said the young girl was intending to go to Syria via Egypt for “jihad”.”She wanted to join the ‘jihad’ in Syria, she was influenced by propaganda on Facebook,” he said.

Investigations showed that a man in Egypt had provided the money for the girl’s flight ticket to Syria.

“We believe the group had arranged for the flight ticket and expenses for the girl to fly to Syria.

The girl’s story that she wanted to marry the man could have been made up,” he said.

Khalid said the girl was arrested under the Penal Code and the investigation was being carried out under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012.
He said the teenager’s attempted departure to join Isis was not a good sign, adding that parents needed to monitor and ensure their children were not influenced by Isis propaganda.

Police are trying to find out whether any of the girl’s friends had been influenced to join the militant group in Syria.

The 14-year-old girl, who is from a religious school in Shah Alam, it is believed that the girl, who is from Muar, Johor, planned to get married to the man, who is studying in Egypt, before going to Syria to join the IS group.
