Double Decker Tourist Bus Crash Kills 8, Injures 28 in Kanchanaburi Province

KANCHANABURI – Eight people have been killed and 28 others injured,when a double-Decker tour bus crashed into a concrete barrier at the “Curve of a Hundred Corpses” in Kanchanaburi’s Si Sawat district on Sunday.

The tour bus, carrying 40 passengers, failed to negotiate the sharp curve, causing it to hit the cement barrier and the mountain before overturned, killing the driver and eight other passengers police said.

Rescuers worked furiously to retrieve the bodies of the dead and injured passengers trapped in the wreckage of the bus. All were rushed to a nearby hospital.

Investigators said that the bus, carrying Thai tourists who were on a rafting trip to Si Sawat in Kanchanaburi for the long holiday, and was on the way back home when it hit the concrete barrier.

Police believed the driver might not have been familiar with the route and lost control of the bus.

Locals said there were frequent road accidents at Tabtao curve. It was locally known as the “curve of a hundred corpses”.

Thailand has the second-highest traffic fatality rate in the world, according to a 2013 survey done for the World Health Organization. Other surveys put Thailand in the top four.
