PRACHUAP KHIRI KHAN – Pol Capt Sathid Duangdee, a Muang district police investigator, has reported that 2 Chinese tourists have been killed and another seriously injured when they were hit by a car in Muang district of Prachuap Khiri Khan province late on Wednesday night.

According to the Bangkok Post, rescuers of the Prachuap Dhammasathan Foundation went to the intersection of Phetkasem and Ko Lak roads in tambon Ko Lak on being informed of the accident about 11PM.

Chang Ching, 26, a Chinese visitor from Yunnan province, said the accident occurred when he and his parents, aunt and uncle were crossing Phetkasem road in search of a shop selling rice porridge.

He said a car moving at a high speed hit his mother, Shi Chang, and aunt Wo Sue, and dragged away his uncle, Chang Hong. The uncle’s body was later found two kilometers away in bushes alongside the road.

A police search located the hit-and-run car in front of a car repair shop on Phetkasem road. The front of the car was damaged and its windshield shattered.

The driver, identified as Thanuwat Chamnit, a 56 year old resident from Bangkok, reportedly told police that the two Chinese tourists were crossing the road in the dark and he could not see them in time.

Mr. Thanuwat Chamnij, 56, was taken for questioning and tested for alcohol levels.

Chang Ching told police they came in a group from Yunnan for a tour during the Songkran Festival. After a tour of Phuket, they traveled by car up along Phetkasem road, heading for Huan Hin.

In Muang district of Prachuap Khiri Khan they stopped for a rest, and were looking for place to eat when the tragedy occurred.

Thanuwat has been charged with reckless driving that leads to deaths of others. At least five witnesses have been summoned to give testimonies to the police, Pol.Lt. Satit told reporters.
