Cambodian monks accused of soliciting money from people in Chon Buri

Police in Chon Buri’s Sattahip district said on Monday that they had received complaints from people that the four monks continually asked for donations. They said the group rented a room together instead of staying in a temple as they would be expected to do.

The four monks were named as Phra Chang Charlie, 42, Phra Kerd Viasna, 41, Phra Ram Kim, 38, and Phra Touch Nak, 35.

The detained monks said they had travelled from Cambodia to Sattahip, staying at different temples.

They said they collected money from people during the day and watched pornography and masturbated during the night.

In their room, police found pornographic CDs, a large amount of cash and several mobile phones containing many pornographic video clips.

The monks said they collected about 10,000 baht from people each week and the money was given to their families back home.

Police will charge and fine the four men, who have now left the monkhood, before sending them back to Cambodia.
