BANGKOK – Customs officials arrested Piyawan Jitwong, 28 and seized more than 7 kilograms of cocaine, the largest cocaine seizure in Thailand in at least two years, when she arrived at Suvarnabhumi airport on Monday morning.
The drugs, worth more than 9 million baht, were allegedly found in two pieces of her luggage. Ms Piyawan claimed the luggage belonged to a male friend.
Customs Department adviser Onanong Watcharasetthakul said officials had received a tip-off that a female Thai drug smuggler would arrive at the airport from New Delhi.
Ms Piyawan, told officers she had been hired for 70,000 baht by her Brazilian friend to carry his luggage to Thailand.
She claimed she did not know there were drugs inside the bags and the friend told her someone would pick up the luggage at the airport.
Before arriving at Suvarnabhumi, she said she had a stopover in Ethiopia and had stopped in India for two days.
Ms Onanong said Thai women should not trust foreigners, especially those from the Middle East, who ask them to carry their belongings to Thailand. A growing number of Thai women are being used as drug mules, she said
