Miss Universe Thailand Accused of Abusing Thailand's Flag

Miss Universe Thailand Anchilee Scott-Kemmis was reported to the police after allegedly standing on what appeared to be a Thai flag in a picture on the pageant’s website.

Sonthiya Sawasdee, the former adviser to the House committee on law, justice, and human rights, filed the complaint Tuesday with Pol Lt Gen Samran Nuanma, commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Bureau (MPB).

Sonthiya accused Anchilee of violating the 1979 Flag Act and the announcement by the Prime Minister’s Office banning the use of national flags for commercial purposes.

A picture of Anchilee striking a pose on painted stripes of the country’s flag was released online in a promotional effort before she competes in the 70th Miss Universe pageant on December 12.

The MPB has been asked to investigate the alleged abuse of the flag so that it does not set a bad example for young people, as Anchilee has a large fan base on social media.

It’s possible Miss Universe Thailand is unaware of the improperness of standing on the flag, he explained. It intrigued him to know if the pageant had received prior approval from the PM’s Office to use the flag photo.

In his defense, he said he was merely taking measures to protect the national flag’s prestige, not seeking any jail terms for Miss Universe Thailand.

According to Decha Kittiwitthayanan, the director of the Thanai Klai Took lawyers’ network, offenses against the national flag can result in a maximum jail term of two years, a fine of up to 40,000 baht, or both.
Miss Universe Thailand is not suspected of any wrongdoing, and there is no indication that she has any criminal intentions.
