France Records Over 100,000 Omicron Cases in 24 Hours

Infections from the Omicron Variant have reached six figures in France, as health officials counted 104,611 Omicron cases over the previous 24 hours, the third consecutive record high.

France’s health agency announced the latest figures just ahead of a video-conference meeting Monday when President Emmanuel Macron and other members of his government will discuss the new safety measures for Covid.

A high level of concern has been expressed by officials regarding the rapid spread of the Omicron variant.

A booster vaccination has already been recommended for adults by the health authorities three months after their initial vaccination.

As a result, the government is now moving to make the health passes issued to people who have been vaccinated only valid to those who accept the booster shot.

In Savoie, for instance, officials introduced mandatory mask-wearing at the end of last month, not only in public spaces but also outdoors — a measure just adopted in neighbouring Italy.

Since the beginning of the month, the figures have risen dramatically: on December 4, they crossed 50,000 for the first time before rising steadily.

Coronavirus has caused 122,546 deaths in France to date. Currently, 76.5% of the population is fully vaccinated.
