Flash floods, forest runoff and mudslides caused by tropical depression Haima have ravaged several Northern provinces, damaging vast areas of farmland and affecting many households.

The Meteorological Department issued a fresh warning yesterday that widespread rain with isolated heavy showers is likely in Nan, Tak, Phayao and Phrae provinces in the next couple of days.

People in risk areas along foothills and waterways should beware of the possibility of flash floods, said the department.

A nine-year-old girl suffered an electric shock while wading through floodwater in Tak’s Mae Sot district yesterday.

She is being treated at the Mae Sot Hospital, as police investigate. They believe the electricity supply to the area had not yet been cut off when the Burmese girl reached the flooded spot.

In Mae Ramat district, residents in two villages were evacuated in the face of rising floodwaters and more than 100 houses were inundated. The floods also ravaged a vast area of paddy fields but no casualties were reported.

In Phayao, heavy rains overnight from Saturday until yesterday morning caused water levels in four rivers _ Nam Ngim, Nam Ngern, Nam Ru and Nam Satod _ to overflow, inundating many houses in four riverside communities in Pong district, said Anurak Prongsuya, deputy chairman of the Oy tambon administration organisation in Pong district. In Nan, floods had hit 48 villages.
