Entertainment Venues in Pattaya Push for Lift of Alcohol Ban

Entertainment venues in Thailand’s resort town of Pattaya have stepped up their calls for the lifting of the alcohol ban to boost tourism. Pattaya’s entertainment industry has been decimated by almost 2 years of covid-19 regulations.

More than 400 entertainment venue operators and other related businesses in Pattaya submitted a letter to Pattaya’s Mayor calling for the easing of Covid-19 restrictions on Tuesday. They asked Mayor Sonthaya Khunplome to greenlight the reopening of entertainment venues and allow the serving of alcoholic in restaurants, eateries, nightspot venues, and hotels.

Ms. Lamphueng Hamilton, chairwoman of the entertainment venue operators club told the Bangkok Post that the Covid-19 pandemic has forced many businesses to close for almost two years. Many had suffered huge losses and or bankruptcy.

She said the covid-19 situation in Thailand and especially Pattaya has gradually improved, with over 85% of the local population vaccinated against the coronavirus.

Entertainment venue operators and business owners want restrictions in Pattaya to be eased like those in four other provinces. These provinces’ alcoholic drinks can now be served.

Pattaya was excluded from the list despite being recognized as a world-class resort town, she said.

Alcohol service in only three provinces

Since Thailand reopened on Nov 1, alcoholic drinks have been allowed only in restaurants in Bangkok, Krabi, Phangnga, and Phuket.

Mayor Mr. Sonthaya said numerous efforts had been made to push for the reopening of nightspot venues, in line with the reopening of 17 provinces to foreign tourists on Nov 1.

However, alcoholic drinks have been allowed only in the four provinces’ designated blue zones. The blue zones are tourist-oriented areas with few Covid-19 restrictions. Permission to serve alcohol in the 13 other provinces is presently under consideration by the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration, he said.

He believed the government and the CCSA would decide on the alcohol issue sometime this month.

On Friday,  CCSA spokesman Dr. Taweesilp Visanuyothin said they would defer by another month on a plan to allow pubs, bars, and karaoke venues to reopen on Dec 1.

He said a new tentative reopening date has been set for Jan 2022 and only for some areas, thus depending on the Covid-19 situation at the time.
