1,400 houses in seven districts damaged

CHIANG RAI -Thousands of homes in Thailand’s northernmost province of Chiang Rai stayed in darkness on Saturday night after a fierce tropical storm knocked down high electricity poles and damaged more than 1,400 houses in seven districts.

Deputy Governor of Chiang Rai province Piphat Ekphaphan revealed that 1,400 houses in eight districts of Chiang Rai province had reportedly been damaged by the summer storm. Locals in Mae Lao district of Chiang Rai Province described the summer storm as the “biggest in 50 years”.

Provincial authorities has already asked the military to send in troops to help repair the damaged houses.

Officials said at least 11 high voltage electricity poles were knocked down while repairs were expected to complete Sunday evening.

Meanwhile, in the nearby Fang district of Chiang Mai Province, five hundred more homes, as well as farm produce, were also reported to have been damaged in the area. As a temporary relief measure, local authorities have distributed roofing tiles to affected locals so that they could repair their homes.

Authorities are hoping the tropical storm eased the haze situation in the North, especially in Lamphun province which remained critical more than a week as the amount of dust particles had exceeded the safe level of 120 micrograms per cubic meter.

Air quality in several provinces in the North had reportedly been poor for more than a month due to slash and burn activities, including haze blown from Thailand’s neighboring countries.
