CHIANG RAI – Ani Konchog Lhamo, a Buddhist nun in the Tibetan tradition, gave a practice on lovingkindness to 14 attendees at the meeting for the Chiang Rai Buddhist Group on Sunday.

The meeting was the third for the group, which meets every Sunday at Klang Wian temple in downtown Chiang Rai from 12 pm to 1:30 pm.

Ani led the group through a practice which involved meditating on friends, neutral people and people attendees had problems with while wishing them happiness and physical and mental wellness. At the end of the session each attendee gave his impression of the practice.

At the next meeting on Sunday February 16 Ani will be teaching practice on compassion.

Ani Konchog Lhamo is a psychologist and passionate photographer as well as a Buddhist nun. Currently, she is a therapist and dhamma teacher at the New Life Foundation near Chiang Rai but she also teaches in Norway at the Karma Tashi Ling, the seat of Tibetan Buddhism in Norway.

At Sunday’s session Abbot Yutthapong Pongrangsee taught the group a Theravada chant before the loving-kindness teaching. Rick Bowles, an American opened the meeting with three prostrations to the Buddha. Attendees included Americans, Canadians, British, Europeans and Thais.

“Thanks to all who attended,” said Tony MacGregor, one of the organizers of the group. “And thanks to Klang Wian temple for giving us the space. There’s definitely a lot of interest in Buddhism amongst foreigners here, and many tourists are keen to learn about Buddhism while they’re in Thailand so we expect attendance to grow.”

MacGregor added that the Sunday afternoon sessions are a great place to ask questions about Buddhism and try out meditation.
