Thick fog covers the northern province of Chiang Rai Thailand, particularly in mountainous areas, causing poor visibility for road users on Sunday, reported the Thai News Agency.

Dense fog covers many areas of Chiang Rai, especially on roads leading to major tourist destinations such as Doi Mae Salong Mountain Doi Tung and Phrathat Mae Fa Luang Shrine district.

The fog reduces visibility to less than 20 feet Sunday morning, forcing motorists to drive slowly with their headlights and fog lights.

Chettha Mosikrat, chief of prevention and mitigation in Chiang Rai, said travelers who were not familiar with local roads in the high mountains, especially the roads from January to Mae Salong Mae and Huai Khrai Doi Tung, driving carefully and turn on fog lights to prevent accidents.

Meanwhile, the fog in the province of Songkhla, apparently caused by forest fires in neighboring Indonesia, became less dense early Sunday, prompting local fishermen to resume work after having covered much lower provinces Southern Thailand in the last seven days.

Songkhla Authorities asked the Department of Meteorology to monitor the fog, and the development of forest fires in Sumatra and the southwest monsoon so that they could issue timely warnings to local people, if the fog returned.
