Thai Navy and Police Seize Huge Cache of Meth in Wiang Kaen District of Chiang Rai

CHIANG RAI – Thailand’s Royal Thai Navy’s Mekong River Unit and police seized a huge cache of methamphetamine pills and Ice during their patrol in Wiang Kaen district of Chiang Rai province on Monday night (April 2).

The patrol was tightened following a tip-off that drug traffickers would smuggle a huge cache of drugs from Ban Donsawan in Ban Houayxay of the Lao province of Bokeo across the river to the Thai border ahead of the Songkran festival.

The patrolmen spotted a pickup truck parked by the river bank at Ban Thai Charoen at about 10.30 pm.

They encircled the truck and ordered search. However nobody was in the truck but a huge cache of drug was left on the open cargo area.

The cache includes 9.4 million meth pills and 788 kilograms of Ice or crystal methamphetamine. The drug was estimated to be 1.7 billion baht on street.

Meanwhile, Police seized 1.6 million methamphetamine pills believed belong to a notorious drug baron in the central region in two separate raids in Lop Buri province on Monday.

Acting on a tip-off, police raid a house in Ban Taloong, Lop Buri’s Muang district which was believed to be a safe house to store the drugs reportedly originated from the Wa army in Myanmar.
