CHIANG RAI – Students in Chiang Rai Province were unable to attend school due to the recent earthquake that struck on May 5th, the biggest earthquake in a hundred years.

The Mae Lao Witthayakom School, which is the district’s main high school in Chiang Rai province has been devastated by the earthquake. Another school, the Saikao Subdistrict Administration Organization School, has also received severe damage as it is located only 600 meters away from the quake’s epicenter.

The principal of Mae Lao Witthayakom School said that the school was scheduled to open on May 12th. However, many of the school’s main buildings were badly damaged by the quake. All of the buildings are now under repair and it would take about 1 year to renovate. By this time, the students are using the cafeteria and multipurpose building instead of their classroom.
