Severe Cold Winter Weather Concern of Thailand’s Interior Ministry

CHIANG RAI –  Gen. Anupong Paojinda, Minister of Interior for Thailand has ordered Chiang Rai Province and other related Northern and Northeastern Provinces to provide aid to the public affected from the cold weather and to come up with prevention measures for the upcoming hazardous cold weather.

Gen. Anupong Paojinda stated that the current winter situation has forced up to 250 districts from 23 provinces to be declared as winter disaster zones in the northern and northeastern regions of Thailand.

The lowest temperature measured six degrees in Mae Chaem and Galyani Vadhana districts.
Concerned authorities are distributing winter gear to affected people as weather forecasters predict temperatures dropping further by 4-6 degrees Celsius in Northern Thailand from tomorrow through Friday
Local hospitals are treating more respiratory disease and asthma patients, especially children and the elderly

All related agencies have been ordered to come up with a distribution plan for aid objects such as blankets and winter gears, as well as the prevention measures for the disasters of risk during winter such as fire, wildfire, fog, diseases, road accident, and tourism accident.

The Director-General of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) Chatchai Phromlert has asked the public to be prepare for the cold weather condition and to exercise extra caution when handling fires as the current dry air and strong winds can cause the flame to spread uncontrollably.

Road users are also asked to turn on the headlights, refrain from speeding, and leave an extra space from the car ahead to prevent accidents in foggy conditions.

The public is also advised to take care of their health, wear thick clothes, and keep themselves warm to prevent being ill from the diseases in winter season.

The most affected provinces are Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, Nan, Phayao, Uttaradit, Phrae, Lampoon, Mae Hong Son, Phitsanulok, Phetchabun, Udon Thani, Sakon Nakhon, Kalasin, Surin, Nakhon Phanom, Loei, Khon Kaen, Nong Khai, Bueng Kan , Nong Bua Lamphu, Chaiyaphum, and Mukdahan.
