CHIANG RAI – Commander of the National Police Bureau, Police General Somyote Poompanmuang reported during a press conference that more than one million tablets of methamphetamine have been seized during an anti-drugs operation in Chiang Rai.

Pol. Gen. Somyote said that seven men of Thai Nationality are alleged to be members of a major drug trafficking ring in Chiang Rai’s Wiang Kaen district. One million one hundred and fifty thousand speed pills, and three cars were confiscated during the operation.

Police were acting on a tip from informants that the ring would smuggle the drugs in three cars from Chiang Rai to Nakhon Ratchasima.  The seven men were charged with possession of first rate narcotics intended for sale.

Pol. Gen. Somyote believes the drugs were manufactured elsewhere and Thailand was being used by trafficking rings to ship them to their customers. Currently the Golden Triangle countries, Thailand, Myanmar and Laos are closely cooperating in border areas to suppress the activities of these rings.
