CHIANG RAI -As tourism numbers in Mae Sai District continue to rise for the Thai New Year, police and military security officials are overseeing the safety of tourists in the Golden Triangle in Chiang Rai Province and looking out for illegal items.

The Military and police sectors have both said they have boosted security at border areas in Chiang Rai Province to handle a surge in New Year vacationers.

Police have increased patrols around frequently-visited spots in the Golden Triangle in Chiang Saen District to ensure safety for visitors. Most of them plan to see the large golden Buddha image and take a sightseeing boat trip on the Mekong River.

Authorities in Chiang Saen District in Chiang Rai have been on patrol to ensure safety and provide assistance and advice to tourists who are traveling to Chiang Saen’s Ban Sop Ruak Subdistrict.

Officials are also patrolling the Chiang Rai side of the Mekong River with no less than 30 officers dispatched each day to intercept the possible smuggling of illegal goods.

The Mekong River peacekeeping unit has dispatched 30 additional security officials to provide land and water patrols and has also set up checkpoints at crime-prone areas to intercept any introduction of illegal items.

Mae Sai District is currently teeming with tourists shopping for goods both on the Thai side and in Myanmar’s Tachilek Province.

Chiang Rai officials are organizing the ASEAN Countdown 2016 at a Thai-Myanmar border checkpoint in Mae Sai district from December 31, 2015 until January 1, 2016.

The event is aimed to promote tourism among Thai and foreign visitors during the New Year’s festival and to welcome the establishment of the ASEAN Economic Community.

The event features Thai, Lao and Myanmar cultural performances, music concerts by Thai and Myanmar artists and a fireworks show.

The Mae Sai Chamber of Commerce expects this season will generate over 1 billion Baht in cash-flow.
